Tuesdays with Nanny Kitty ~ Part 3

My Nanny Kitty always had thick wavy hair, so she didn't have to fuss much with it.  In the mid 1920's, when this photo was taken in Brooklyn, New York, short wavy hair was all the rage.  Funny, Nanny Kitty was extremely close to her own grandmother, Elizabeth Agnes Quinn (pictured on the right.)
She was my great great grandmother, and she was born in 1848.  So she would have been about 75 years old here.  Since I was always so very close to both of my grandmothers, it thrills me to bits that my own grandmother had a very special relationship with her own grandmother.
It is difficult for me to explain a grandmother/granddaughter relationship to my 10 year old daughter, as she never had the opportunity to have a close relationship with either of her grandmothers.  The bond can be so very close, based on loyalty, affection, and tenderness.  Pleasures as simple as holding hands, to as complicated as their sharing family secrets with you.  The stories they tell, that previously fell on deaf ears, elicit utter joy and excitement from you.  You want to hear more, even if the story is repeated over and over again.  If only I could hear one more story.....

As an afterthought, don't you just love those old fashioned awnings?

  4. Hey Maureen, great photo of your grandmothers. I was very close to my Mammaw. She's been gone since 1988 and was the last of my grandparents. My boys had their paternal grandparents for a while here but they are both gone now. My dad no longer speaks to us, so that leaves my mom and they don't see her very often. Things are quite different now; certainly different from when I was growing up.

Hope you are well. Best wishes for the rest of the week. Tammy

Lovely photo. I wish I´ve had that special bond with my grandmother. I miss her and wish I had asked her about her childhood and what the world was like as a young woman.

  12. I am so happy that you're writing again Maureen. I always enjoy seeing your old family photos and reading about your family. I loved both of my grandmothers but didn't live in the same state where they were so I missed a lot growing up, except when we visited on vacations. Now here I am, 2 states away from my own grandsons. I understand now how hard it must have been on my grandparents to be far away!

I love reading about your Nanny Kitty. I do love her hair! The photo is so precious and you are so blessed to have this in your possession. Too many times these are lost. How great you were so close to your grandmother. I do think we can be a great blessing to our families.
