A Visit to the Park ~ 60's Style

Growing up in Queens County, New York, we were lucky to have a city park about 3 blocks from our house.  Nothing fancy mind you, but a small park in front of a public elementary school.  It had your typical amusements such as swings. slides, see-saws, and my absolute favorite...the sand box!  Oh yes, against my mother's true appreciation of neatness, we insisted on going to the messy sandbox.  Armed with plastic laundry detergent measuring cups, we would sift through the sand and have a ball.  Notice in the photo above, this was not an open sand pit, but rather a oval shaped cemented structure surrounded by an iron fence.  That is a sandbox....1966 style!  :)  I used to think, "wow, they should fill this thing up with water in the summertime!"  They never did that, but the park did hae a big water sprinkler, shaped like a mushroom, that cooled us down during the hot city summers.

After our sandbox adventures, my brother and I would sit down on those ever uncomfortable wooden park benches, to have a rest.  Things seemed so well organized back then!  I never felt as organized with my children, as my parents were with us when I was a small child.  I'm not sure if that is because our times have changed, and there are just so many more distractions in this day and age, or if I'm just an unorganized person... :)

  1. Lovely nostalgia there... flooded with sunshine and smiles, the way all childhood memories ought to be!

I think we have so many more things going on in our lives, and so many more balls to keep in the air (including blogging!) that being organised is much harder than it used to be. Then again, maybe your children will look back on their childhood and remember you being very organised :-)

  2. Such awfully sweet, traditional photos - and so darling. Maybe you kids think of you as organized too.

  5. Sweet pictures of you and your brother. Things sure were simpler back then. My kids definitely have a different childhood than I did. Too many distractions in this day and age. So many kids don't even know how to enjoy the great big outdoors, and here it is too hot to even try. :/ When we were in Paris, there was a park across from our hotel where business folks would go after work because it actually had free wi-fi connection. They would sit on those hard park benches and text, talk, check emails. And parents with small children would bring their kids to play for a while at the playground. We don't have anything like that around here. :/ Hope you are having a great day. Tammy

  6. You and your brother are so cute! Thanks for sharing these sweet memories and photos!

I feel the same way about organizing. For me, I think I expect more now. I want the organization, but don't really want to spend 14 hours a day doing it. I think some of them did expect to.

  7. We live in an instant world now. It wasn't that way 50 years ago. Back then you could carry out a plan because you weren't interrupted by a cell phone, fax, or tweet. I loved growing up in the 60's
