The year is 1966, and the place, my backyard in Queens County, New York. My brother and I used to play a game, called the "fence game." There was a 2 foot high cement border that ran along the bottom of that fence, with the width being only about a child's shoe size. The object of the game, was to start at the beginning of the fence, and work your way across each other by holding onto the fence without falling down. Each person would take turns going across the other. The person who made it to the end of the fence without falling down, won. Believe you me, it was heapsful of fun!
My dad, with camera ever ready, caught this shot of us mid-game! Growing up in a city, with not many outdoor organized activities, we had to use our ingenuity, to come up with ideas for outdoor fun! Did you used to have a silly made up game, when you were young?
I'd love to hear about it!

ReplyDeleteHi Maureen,
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet photo of you and your brother, you are darlings and you must have happy memories.
I love it how we used to make our own fun and we did not have expensive toys but we always had a happy time.
Have a wonderful week

1966 -- the year I was born. :) Love that photo of you two. You are so fortunate to have so many. Once when we were moving and had packed our belongings on a train, it blew up and much was lost from my childhood. :( I have one brother but don't remember much that we did together. I remember that when he used to get mad at me, he would kick me in the stomach. He's almost 44 years old, 6'4" and a gentle giant now. Have a great week. Tammy
ReplyDeleteThat is one of the Cutest shots!!!
ReplyDeleteSomewhere in my mind's eye.. late 50's ..I remember something..something a bit like this..
Priceless capture..again..how on earth did you get some great crisp shots back then? well your dad..:)
Love your photos and memories.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet photo! I lived our in the country with lots of kids nearby but we made up games all the time! And what games we didn't entirely make up we would add our own twists and rules to!
ReplyDeletelovely picture, it must be nice to have a brother, i was an only child.
ReplyDeleteOh, so sweet, Maureen! This may be just about my favorite photo of you & your brother yet! How wonderful your father was...
ReplyDeleteI can't remember a specific made-up game my brothers & I played, although I know we had them...we played a lot of kick-the-can and things like that, though, with neighborhood friends...I'll have to ask my brothers if they remember!
Thanks for all you share, dear friend...
Julie
Delightful photo! I love how you and your brother got along so well!
ReplyDeleteYep..there was a game of (WW11 was going on)pretending to be parachuters and jumping off the tack room roof onto the neighbors lawn. Not a big drop at all..maybe four feet...but at age 6 or 7 and being very small...I would never do it. One day I did..finally and jammed my legs up through my shoulders..and I have never jumped off anything since then. :) We would yell "BOMB'S AWAY" and jump... so much for made- up games. ;) Yours looks a lot safer!
ReplyDeleteSo cute...and thank you for directing me your way....:)))
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful shot and sweet memory.
ReplyDeleteenJOY a lovely day,
Kimberly
No made up games that I can remember, but that is an adorable photo!
ReplyDeleteOh Maureen, What a treasure you father was to have the foresight to snap so many special moments of your childhood. My brother and I too made up the silliest of games in our urban landscape. It seems to be universal with it comes to play time! Thank you for sharing your very special photos with us! Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteHi Maureen,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your sweet comments, and you see, your dad had a camera to freeze this moment in your life, I hope my girls will think that too when they are older. nightnight!
Maureen xx
Adorable memories ....adorable you! xoxoox
ReplyDeleteYou are so cute! We had varieties of that game! In some ways I think it was a lot more fun those days than it is today with all technology around us. My sister and I had a lot of fun. We were outside all the time. Playing games, inventing new ones and riding our bikes. We were so girly and liked to play dress-up with our mother´s lace curtains ;)
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day,
Sanna
So great that he was able to capture this moment in time. Great pic! XOL
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful photo Maureen, lovely blog too!

Hello Maureen thank you for your lovely comment over on DollieD - I have cheered myself up now and caught up on my sleep :-)
ReplyDeleteFabulous photo - I love your outfits! As an only child I used to have two imaginary friend's - Harry Wall and Sally Anne lol! They came everywhere with me and my family still laugh about them now x
Hi Maureen,
ReplyDeleteI grew up in the city too and yes my sister and I being just a year apart made up a lot of games to amuse ourselves. We invented invisible ponies that we would ride everywhere we went whether it was to the market with our mother or to go down the block to a friends house. When we had to ride in a car across town, we would count the red steps in the neighborhoods. Pat would look on one side of the street and I on the other and the one who counted the most by the time we got home would win. Having red steps must have been a popular thing in the late fifties and early sixties in Boise. :-)
You and your brother were darling children.
Oh how sweet! We played the regular games, hide and seek, kick the can - nothing spectacular but always fun with the neighborhood kids.
