The Vintage Carriage (Pram)

It is the winter of 1963, and my brother is just about 7 months old here.  It was a gorgeous sunny day, which would have meant a mandatory taking in of fresh air.  A walk in the carriage was an event in itself back then.  Parents would always allocate time to take a stroll for a few blocks, usually pushing a carriage such as this.

Carriage decorations were all the rage too.  One had to have a big plastic rattle, portraying the color of the baby's gender, for identification purposes.  We all know how annoying those questions such as "Oh, is it a boy or a girl?" can be!  ;)

Although it does not appear in these photos, my mother had a very nice silver, metal, blanket clip that attached to the side of the carriage to hold the blanket in place.  It had my brother's initials engraved upon it.  Many years after my mother passed away, I came upon that blanket clip, neatly wrapped in it's original box.  I was happy to be able to then give it to my brother, as a keepsake.

As to what became of the cute hanging rattle, and the regal looking carriage, that is sadly a mystery, but happily the photos live on....

  3. I can't believe how crisp and clear your photos are.. Treasures!!!

    What a deluxe pram~

I bought one for our wee ones..and of course they never stayed in it long:( Only in completely horizontal position when they didn't even know:)

This Spring..we put it curbside....our littlest is two....everything I don't need..I put there..I think it took 5 minutes and a new nana up the street asked if she could have it..
    Mais oui~

Cute post as always..Memory lanes are some of my favorite streets.

  6. The tones in these photos are so beautiful! I love how you describe the "old" traditions. It makes me want to get a pram, even though my youngest is almost three!

  7. Great photos! They certainly don't make them like they used to! Funny how the prams look a lot like the cars of the time

  10. Great photos Maureen! I have said this before, you are so fortunate to have so many wonderful pictures from your childhood. I have one picture of me in a baby coach...I think it was plain black...kind of dismal, huh? Your brother looks pretty happy in spite of the fact that he probably could hardly move :D

  11. How adorable! My parents took gazillions of pictures of me, but I don't recall one of me in a pram. Surely they had one--I'm going to have to ask!

  12. What beautiful photographs, and I love that pram. When my little sister was born, my mom bought me a doll size pram, so we could go for walks together. I loved the blankets with the silver clips to hold them in place. Thank you for bringing back a lovely memory.

  15. Maureen! You absolutely know you are sleighing us with this wonderful post. A vintage pram AND celluloid rattle. It's nearly more cuteness than I can bear combined with your sweet as can be baby brother. I think this is why we love them always. We remember these very early sweet days! Thanks for all you share, it's such a joy to me! E

  21. Oh my gosh! My mom has pictures of me in the same type of stroller!! In one of the photos it was all decorated up for a town parade. There is the most lovely pastel crepe paper all over it! Now I have to hunt for that pic! Thanks for sharing!

  22. Oh what a wonderful baby carriage! I´m born in the 70´s but I remember my mom told me that she also had one. Strolling around town with me in it - and my cousin! It was so big and wide that she could take us both. People thought we were twins ;)

When I visited Denmark some 14 years ago, I saw a lot of these wagons and I remember that I thought it was so strange and old-fashioned. If I saw one today, I would totally dig it!

    Hugs,
    Sanna
