As we draw closer to the Thanksgiving holiday here in the States, I fondly recall many of my childhood Turkey days. The year is 1968, and here my mother is cleaning up after our big meal. The turkey has already been devoured, and the dreaded clean up begins. I see the required pastel colored Tupperware piled up, waiting to be filled with leftovers. Notice the electric coffee pot is already plugged in and perking away. Dessert will be served shortly. Can you smell it? I do, and I can also hear the psssheww, psssheww, psssheww rhythmic brewing sound, emanating from that statuesque aluminum coffee pot.
Our kitchen had been recently renovated, with new cabinets, back splash, and stainless steel sink. Looks like maybe the money ran out when it came to replacing the fridge, as that beige one might be an earlier model. However, the creme de la creme, was the new pull out range, and attached upper glass doors oven. My mother was so happy with her "state of the art" kitchen redo. This was the kitchen forever etched in my mind, the first room you came upon when entering our home. The last room you walked through when departing. The center of my happy childhood memories. Did you have a favorite room in your childhood home? I would be delighted to hear.

What a lovely post - and your mother is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteHi Maureen,
ReplyDeleteYour Mother is so elegant and beautiful in her wonderful kitchen and can see that it would have been 'state of the art' back then.
We had a coffee percolator just like yours and oh yes... the tupperware!
Two rooms I loved in my childhood was the kitchen as we had a little chip heater that we used to sit by to keep warm in winter and a sunroom that had a big blackboard and we used to love playing here.
Happy week
Hugs
Carolyn
A wonderful picture of your mother
ReplyDeleteLook at your mom:) Wow.. she looks like every TV star I loved.. look how elegant and pretty she is in her new kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI love that you share these photos and think you area so lucky to have them.
My small bedroom was off our tiny kitchen in our first duplex(upstairs) in Mtl.. I loved seeing my mom sitting at the table while I fell asleep. We moved from there when I was 10..I am thinking I was 6- and under w/ those memories:)
Security..love,comfort.
I swear we had the exact same coffee pot! I knew it was a holiday when that thing came out and I also remember the percolating noise it made.
ReplyDeleteThanks doll,

I'm wondering how on earth your mother could look so beautiful and glamorous in the kitchen after all the work on Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteHi Maureen,
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving. It´s a holiday we don´t celebrate here, but think we should.
I bet that kitchen looked super nice after the redo and your mother must have been so proud. Never heard of a pull out range before. Was that common in the US I wonder.
Hugs,
Sanna
Isn't it great how photographs bring back a wonderful memory? That photo of your mom is wonderful. I will be cooking the thanksgiving meal and I know for sure I won't be wearing a pretty dress while cooking and cleaning up afterwards.
ReplyDeleteDanielle
The happy hostess in her beautiful new kitchen! I love her dress.
ReplyDeleteI loved our tiny kitchen, where my sisters and I spent a lot of time washing and drying dishes with our mom.

Oh Maureen, I love to read about your memories! Our living room is in most of my memories. My mom did such a beautiful job of decorating it during the holidays :-)
ReplyDeleteIsnt is just something how our moms wore these gorgeous dresses and just cooked up a "storm" on the holidays?? lol Different as I am wearing my sweats! LOVE this great pic..you are a master at capturing memories and sharing them...thanks :)

ReplyDeleteM.L.
I love the photo of you mother! I have one of my own mother turning from the oven like that..except she was checking the turkey and had a meat fork in her hand. What great pictures.
ReplyDeleteI think the kitchen was my favorite spot...Now my favorite spot is all over the house. Maybe it was that way then. I don't think I cared much for the dining room. Not sure why...just was not a favorite place to be. I guess the kitchen... :)
And Maureen...thank you so much for being a follower...so sweet of you! I hope I dont' bore you to tears! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful memories, Maureen...your childhood kitchen reminds me of my grandparents...so retro modern!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it an amazing thing that so many of the tiniest details become indelibly etched in our minds...the seemingly unimportant things back then become so very precious to us now...
Thanks, as always, dear friend, for sharing your sweet family memories with us...
Hope your day is beautiful in every way.
Julie
You have such great family photos and memories to go along with them. We moved every few years when I was growing up so I only have faint memories of certain places we lived, and very few photos from those early years. Hope all is well with you. I have ankle wrapped and foot up. :/ Best wishes, Tammy
